Southern Hockey League 2025 Award Nominations
Dean Williams Award for outstanding contribution to Hockey
Dean Williams is remembered for his love of life and especially for his love of hockey. He contributed as a player, coach, and high-level umpire. This award was provided by the Williams family in memory of Dean and is to recognise someone who keeps giving to hockey and takes on whatever role is required - however large or small, and in good spirit.
Nominations must provide supporting evidence to highlight the significant contributions of the nominee either this year or over a number of years, which also reflect the good spirit and love of hockey displayed by Dean Williams. Where possible, please include a photo of the nominee.
Certificates of Appreciation
Certificates of Appreciation are presented to members of the Hockey community who are deemed to have made an exceptional contribution in one or more areas towards the successful conduct of Hockey Tasmania and/or Southern Hockey League events and activities.
Nominations must provide supporting evidence to highlight the contributions of the nominee. Where possible, please include a photo of the nominee.
Just Hockey Coach of the Year Award
This award is presented annually to acknowledge a coach (one male and one female) who through their commitment and dedication has made an exceptional contribution to the pursuit of Hockey excellence, sportsmanship, and participation. The Coach of the Year Award was proposed and has been sponsored by Just Hockey since 2005.
A selection panel consisting of SCC Convenor, SHL Technical Manager/ Officiating Coordinator and two SCC members, will assess each nomination against the criteria to determine the two (one male and one female) most worthy nominees.
(3) Nominations must detail achievements and may include the significance of the achievement and the value to the hockey community.
Criteria:
The Coach -
· Shall be actively involved in a coaching role in any competition endorsed by Hockey Tasmania including school, junior and/or senior club and/or state teams.
· Shows leadership by modelling good sportsmanship and respect for players, officials, and colleagues.
· Is encouraging and inclusive of athletes regardless of ability, age, or gender.
· Is dedicated, enthusiastic and freely gives their time, not for reward.
· Promotes active participation in hockey within the community.
· Demonstrates improvement in their role as a Coach and adopts strategies to improve their coaching performance including gaining HockeyEd accreditation.
· Displays commitment to player development over a period of time. Achieves success by employing innovative and creative coaching techniques.
Pat Hood Umpire Encouragement Award
This award recognises umpires (one male and one female) with potential and encourages them to continue. It is named in honour of Pat Hood who was a Life Member of Hockey Tasmania; an Australian badged umpire who umpired for many years at national women’s championships; the Umpires Convenor for STWHA for many, many years; and an assessor of umpires, who conducted junior umpire development workshops, delivered umpire lectures, and set and marked written umpire exams.
Nominations should provide detail about current level of accreditation and any work being undertaken to achieve the next level of accreditation; summary of local umpiring duties undertaken this year; involvement as a volunteer umpire at school, club, regional, state and/or national events.
Assessment Process:
The SHL Officiating Group shall evaluate the information provided on each nominee to determine the recipients of this award.
