What is HockeyEd?
Hockey Australia’s national accreditation training program is known as HockeyEd. Accreditation programs cover the following officiating areas:
- Coach
- Umpire
- Technical Official
The programs continue to operate within the Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS) and National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS).
The HockeyEd training programs are competency based and are designed to reflect the modern game and the needs of hockey participants. These programs focus on developing practical skills and self-development, and thus ensure officials are better prepared to meet the demands of the game.
The HockeyEd accreditation programs are open to those candidates who can be assessed within the Australian hockey environment. The programs are delivered in a combination of formats including online learning, practical sessions, self-development activities and workshop training.
Coaching and Officiating Frameworks
The Hockey Education Framework provides a cohesive structure to guide the learning, development, and progression of everyone involved in hockey — from community to international level — including coaches, officials, players, and educators. There are four individual frameworks that complete the whole of Hockey Australia learnings:
1. Coaching
2. Umpiring
3. Officiating
4. Sport Integrity
Our refreshed individual frameworks introduce a clear formal accreditation pathway, integrating FIH Academy courses from the Development Level onwards (State, club, and school contexts) to deliver globally recognised, world-class education for all in the sport. Built on contemporary learning principles and aligned with international standards, the frameworks promote consistent, inclusive, and purposeful learning experiences that strengthen capability, enhance delivery, and foster a lifelong connection to hockey, while enabling individuals to engage in learning suited to their personal goals and stage of involvement.
We recommend signing up to the FIH Academy learning, as there are a plethora of FREE learning offerings from: starting hockey, Empower and Engage series, to top coach masterclasses.
How to use the frameworks
1. Select your framework: For your relevant role (Coach, Umpire, Official), click on the corresponding framework.
2. Determine your pathway in the framework:
Support: A free learning course for those commencing their journey to assist in their education role.
Lead: Paid, multiple learning offerings consisting of either online learning (self-paced) courses, online workshops, in-person workshops and practical assessments. Prerequisites for each tier are indicated.
Facilitator: Our train the trainer pathway for those looking to facilitate and assess foundation learnings and beyond. Prerequisites for each tier are indicated. **Existing Mentor and Educator roles have been replaced with Facilitator**
3. Assess your Sport Integrity requirements:
- Identify the colour band from your education framework e.g. Lead Coach is purple.
- Locate the purple band in the framework.
- Determine which icons are relevant to your level in the key e.g. is development
- Identify which courses are associated with development level for coaching e.g. Annual update, anti-doping fundamentals, coaches course, safe and effective coaching for young athletes in high performance.
- Determine from the key which are required (white icon) and which are recommended (grey icon).

Foundation Lead Coach Course with Hockey Tasmania - Hockey Tasmania are excited to run Foundation Lead Coaching Courses across the state delivered by current Jillaroos Coach and TIS Head Coach - Tim Strapp!
The Foundation Lead Coach Course is the first step in the formal pathway of coaching accrediations in Australia. This course is for beginner coaches who want to begin creating positive environments for participants and take the lead with teams.

Foundation Coaching through Hockey Australia - The Foundation Support Coach is the first accreditation in the coaching framework and is aimed at providing prospective coaches with an introduction to the fundamentals of coaching. This free accreditation is completed entirely online and can be done in the comfort of your own home. It will take approximately 2 hours to complete, and you receive your certificate at the end!

Foundation TO Courses through Hockey Australia - The Foundation Level of Technical Officiating focuses on developing the fundamental skills to officiate games of Hockey. Focusing on managing processes and developing relationships, these courses provide learners with everything they need to know to start their Officiating journey.

We are so incredibly thankful for our TO's and volunteers that keep us running!
Especially during Premier League, we really rely on our amazing volunteers to help with scoring and to keep us organised for our live streaming. We have some resources available for anyone who's helping keep score during the games:

Foundation Umpiring through Hockey Australia - access the free Foundation Support Umpiring course and Foundation Lead Umpiring course through Hockey Australia here. The Foundation level of Umpiring focuses on creating a safe, fun and inclusive environment for participants. Within this level, you will get the opportunity to learn the rules of the game as well as strategies on how to create a positive hockey experience.
