Greater Northern League: Week 2 Preview

Published Fri 17 Apr 2026

Greater Northern League action returns for Week 2 with some sides looking to build off strong starts to the season last weekend, whilst others are seeking a bounce back.

In the Men's Competition, the Queechy Penguins and Burnie Baptist will look to continue their hot starts to the season when they clash at the Aurora Energy Northern Hockey Centre. Both sides were red hot in week 1, registering thumping victories. The defending champions were in ominous touch as they hit 7 past Launceston City in a 7-0 win, with Braden Johnson and Jake Wolfe both hitting braces. Queechy proved too strong for City Marians, as they claimed a 5-1 win, with Justin Ockerby playing a starring role and scoring twice.

South Burnie were also on the winners' list in week 1, thanks to a pair of goals from Hayden Davey as they accounted for Tamar Churinga 3-1, and they will be keen to continue their early momentum as they take on a South Launceston Suns side who took an early lead against West Devonport before falling 4-2. West Devonport take on City Marians this week, who will need to put the clamps on Noah Purton, who scored a hat-trick in the 4-2 victory.

The final match of the round will see Smithton making their first appearance of the season after having the bye in Round 1. They are on the road to take on Tamar Churinga, whilst Launceston City will have an extra week to lick their wounds, with the Round 2 bye.

In the Women's competition, South Burnie and South Launceston will meet after both sides enjoyed opening weekend success. South Launceston began their bid to return to finals with a commanding 5-1 victory over West Devonport, thanks in no small part to a four-goal haul from Angela McAuliffe. South Burnie had a tighter victory, as they snuck past Tamar Churinga 2-1 thanks to goals from Caitlin King and captain Meah Poke.

Tamar Churinga will take on a side that likewise went down in a close week 1 outing in the form of Smithton, who were shut out 2-0 by Launceston City in a tight battle. City will be hoping to build off that victory, but face an uphill task in a local derby against the powerhouse Queechy Penguins. Entering the year as the side to beat, Queechy wasted no time in picking up where they left off, by scoring a big 6-1 week 1 win, with Naomie Harris and Brooke Whitmore both scoring two times.

Having both fallen to big defeats in week 1 against strong opposition, City Marians and West Devonport get the chance to kick-start their seasons and get some early points when they clash in the final game of the round at Meercroft Park.
