DiamondBacks Snatch Dramatic Draw in Top-of-the-Table Clash

DiamondBacks have halted University’s rampaging run of form, with Will Oliver scoring a dramatic late equaliser to secure a 3-3 draw in the top-of-the-table clash.

University appeared to have done enough to claim all three points after building a 3-1 lead through goals from Ben Read, Tyson Johnson and Keenan Johnson. However, Luke Palmer reduced the margin to 3-2 when he converted a penalty stroke just before three-quarter time, before Oliver finished off a slick passing move to fire home a last-gasp leveller in the final 30 seconds and ensure the spoils were shared.

The draw ends University’s run of five consecutive victories, a stretch in which they scored 39 goals.

In the other Men's Premier League match, North West Graduates continued their resurgence, claiming a third straight win with a 4-1 victory over Canterbury.

Harvey Bessell opened the scoring in spectacular fashion, beating two defenders before unleashing a powerful shot into the back of the net. Duncan Honey soon doubled the Bulldogs' advantage from a penalty corner before Harry Faulkner pulled one back for the Lions. The response was immediate, with Honey converting another penalty corner moments later, before Bessell added his second goal of the afternoon to seal a convincing 4-1 victory. The win moves NWG four points clear in third place.

The scheduled clash between Derwent and OHA was postponed, meaning just two Men's Premier League matches were played this weekend.

Ladder Leaders Tested in Women's Premier League

The Women's Premier League saw the competition's top three sides all record victories over the bottom three, although ladder leaders DiamondBacks were made to work hard for their win over University.

University struck first through Essie Pelham in the opening quarter, finishing off a chance created by a storming run through the middle from Harriet Sproule. Phillida Bridley levelled the scores before quarter time with a powerful reverse-stick finish, before Sophie Kruimink put DiamondBacks ahead in the dying seconds of the first half to make it 2-1.

That scoreline remained intact deep into the contest before Kruimink added her second with a reverse-stick goal of her own late in the game to seal a 3-1 victory.

North West Graduates produced another composed performance, defeating Canterbury 3-0. Madeleine Rojahn opened the scoring in just the third minute, but the next goal would not arrive until the final quarter. Ashleigh Arthur provided some breathing room before Beth Dobbie put the result beyond doubt with four minutes remaining.

The victory keeps NWG in second place and delivered a league-leading sixth clean sheet from their opening 10 matches.

In the final game, Derwent scored twice in a match for the first time this season but were unable to match the firepower of the in-form OHA. Competition leading scorer Sofie McLeod netted twice, while Sarah McCambridge and Julia Gunn also bagged doubles as OHA recorded a commanding victory to remain firmly in the premiership race.

Taylor Brooks and Zayna Jackson also scored for the Ships, while Lucinda Washington and Sophie Nichols found the net for the Strikers.
