Premier League Round 12 Preview
Published Thu 25 Jun 2026
Round 12 in the Women's Premier League is headlined by a blockbuster top-of-the-table clash between DiamondBacks and North West Graduates. With just one point separating the sides, first place is on the line as they meet for the third time this season.
The teams have shared the honours so far, with NWG claiming the opening encounter 1-0 before DiamondBacks responded with a 2-1 victory in their most recent meeting. As was the case in last year's Grand Final, little is expected to separate these two powerhouse sides. Their past seven meetings have produced three wins apiece and one draw, with no match decided by more than a single goal and no game featuring more than three goals, highlighting just how evenly matched they are.
Waiting to capitalise on any slip-up will be OHA, who take on University. OHA have won both meetings between the sides this season, recording 2-0 and 4-0 victories, and enters the contest riding a three-game winning streak. University had shown encouraging signs in recent weeks but were comprehensively beaten 5-0 by NWG in the last round and will be determined to bounce back with an improved performance.
The remaining Round 12 fixture sees Derwent host Canterbury in a match that presents a significant opportunity for both sides. Derwent will view the Lions, the team immediately above them on the ladder, as their best chance to secure a first point of the season after falling 2-0 in both previous meetings. Canterbury, meanwhile, knows that if they are to challenge University for fourth place before the end of the regular season, this is a game they simply must win. While the Lions start favourites, Derwent have produced some of their strongest performances of the year over the past month, including a spirited effort against DiamondBacks last week, and cannot be taken lightly.
The men's action begins with a crucial clash in the race for finals, as Canterbury take on Derwent. The fourth-placed Lions currently hold a five-point advantage over the fifth-placed Strikers, although Derwent do have a game in hand. A Canterbury victory would extend the gap to eight points, while a Derwent win, combined with success in their catch up fixture against OHA, would propel them into the top four. Both teams enter desperate for a circuit-breaker, with the Lions having lost their past four matches and the Strikers their past five.
OHA will then look to build on the momentum of their breakthrough victory in Round 11, where they defeated Canterbury 4-1 to secure their first win of the season. Confidence will be high, but they face a stern test against a University side eager to respond after suffering its first defeat of the year, a 4-1 loss to NWG last week. University have dominated the previous meetings between the sides this season, winning 6-1 and 6-3.
The final match of the round shapes as one of the biggest of the season so far, with North West Graduates and DiamondBacks meeting in a contest that could preview a finals showdown. Sitting second and third on the ladder, both sides have plenty at stake. NWG's fortunes have improved significantly with the return of several key players, and a victory would see the Bulldogs leapfrog DiamondBacks into second place. The Snakes, however, have the chance to open up a five-point buffer in second and strengthen their hold on the double chance if they can replicate their commanding 6-1 win from Round 7. The teams have already split their meetings this season, with NWG winning 3-1 in Round 2 before DiamondBacks hit back later in the year.
