Instant Classic Headlines A Tight Round 15 In Men's Premier League

Round 15 in the Men's Premier League was one of the closest rounds of the season to date, producing a trio of tight clashes including an instant classic between DiamondBacks and University.

In the game of the season to date, University defeated DiamondBacks, fighting back from 5-3 down to claim a thrilling 6-5 victory in their top-of-the-table Men’s Premier League clash.

University started brightly, with goals from Oscar Sproule and Keenan Johnson handing them a 2-0 lead before DiamondBacks responded through Luke Palmer and Will Oliver to draw level.

Tyson Johnson restored University’s advantage, but DiamondBacks then struck three times without reply. Goals from Palmer, Josh Walker and Ollie Pritchard put their side ahead 5-3 and seemingly in control of the contest.

The competition's leading marksman, Oscar Sproule scored his second goal in the dying seconds of the third quarter, cutting the margin to one before Ben Read then levelled the contest midway through the final term. Keenan Johnson then produced a moment of quality inside the circle, providing the finish to score the match-winner with five minutes remaining and complete a remarkable comeback.

The result allowed North West Graduates to move into second place on the ladder following a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Canterbury.

The Lions led 2-1 at three-quarter time thanks to goals from Cody Innes and Benjamin East, after Harvey Bessell had opened the scoring for the Bulldogs. Star midfielder Angus McMullen equalised early in the final term before Bessell struck for a second time with four minutes remaining to secure the victory.

In the final game of the day, OHA appeared on course for their second victory over Derwent in three weeks after taking a 2-0 lead through penalty-corner goals from Ben Sargent and Joseph Murphy.

However, the Strikers fought back through Ewan Vickery and Josh Mardell to earn a 2-2 draw and secure what could prove a vital point in the battle for fourth place.

Top Three Maintain Winning Ways in Women’s Competition

There were no major surprises in the Women’s Premier League as the competition’s top three sides continued their dominance over the bottom three.

OHA found themselves on the back foot against Derwent after Grace Coad handed the Strikers a surprise 1-0 lead. However, the Ships’ mounting pressure eventually told, with Madeline Nogajski levelling the contest.

Abby Sargent then put OHA ahead before a fine goal from veteran Sarah McCambridge sealed a 3-1 victory.

DiamondBacks were also forced to fight back from a goal down against University after Catherine Webster gave her side an early lead and thought they had doubled the advantage only to see a goal ruled out. Like OHA, the Snakes steadied after the early scare and responded through star trio Madison Clark, Sophie Kruimink and Phillida Bridley, who each converted from penalty corners to secure a 3-1 win.

There were no such troubles for ladder-leading North West Graduates, who powered to a 6-1 victory over Canterbury.

Having entered the match as the competition’s equal-leading goalscorer, Ashleigh Arthur moved four goals clear in the scoring race with a dominant four-goal performance. Madeleine Rojahn scored the Bulldogs’ other two goals, while Nika Van Paridon pulled one back for the Lions.
