Premier League Round 4 Review
Published Tue 05 May 2026
Round of 4 the Men’s Premier League season was the tightest of the season to date, with Canterbury the only side to claim all 3 points, as they downed DiamondBacks 3-2 to move up into second on the ladder.
After holding the defending Premiers, University, to a 3-3 draw in their last outing, the Lions continued their strong form and took advantage of draws in the competition's other matches to leap from fourth place to second with the win. The side was bolstered by the presence of Kookaburra Lachie Rogers, who got on the scoresheet with the game’s opening goal.
The Lions set the victory up in the first half, scoring all three of their goals before holding off the Snakes in the final term, as they pushed late for an equaliser, with former Lion Tyler McDonald having cut the lead to 3-2 with his second goal of the match.
OHA picked up their first point of the season, recovering from a 3-1 deficit to hold North West Grads to a 3-3 draw, as Joseph Murphy fired in a hat-trick.
Whilst the defending premiers, University, were held to a second consecutive draw, with both Jarrod Cunningham and Ben Read scoring twice for their sides in a see-sawing contest that saw both sides leading at various points, before ultimately settling for a point apiece.
In the Women’s competition, North West Graduates secured their spot on top of the ladder, as they accounted for OHA 2- 1 in what was a first v second showdown. After three scoreless quarters, the Bulldogs broke through early in the final quarter via Grace Calvert, who snuck in behind the defence and tucked her shot away, but OHA would hit back almost immediately as Julia Gunn squared things up.
Bulldogs Keeper, Kacee Ponting then made a couple of big saves to keep it at 1-1, before Beth Dobbie would settle the contest, beating a defender before producing a composed finish to score the match winner. The victory sees the Bulldogs open up a five-point buffer atop the table after 4 rounds.
In other action, University made it two wins in a row, with a lone goal from Catherine Webster enough to down Derwent 1-0. Both sides had additional scoring chances throughout the contest, but there was no change to the score following Webster's early strike.
In the final game of the round, DiamondBacks accounted for Canterbury 3-0 thanks to 2 brilliant goals from Tassie Tigers star Phillida Bridley. The star attacker was too much for the Lions defence to handle, scoring two solo efforts after Belinda Page had opened the scoring in the opening minutes of the match.
