Premier League Round 5 Review

In the Men’s Premier League, the match of the day saw North West Graduates defeat Canterbury 4–3, leapfrogging the Lions into second place on the ladder. Returning young guns from the State Under-21 silver medal-winning side, Angus McMullen and Oli Stebbings led the charge. McMullen scored a classy tomahawk goal, while Stebbings produced a hat-trick.

The match burst to life late on when Vincent Harman scored for Canterbury to make it 3–2, prompting the Lions to pull their goalkeeper in search of a dramatic equaliser. However, Stebbings sealed the result with a finish into the empty net. Harry Faulkner did convert a penalty corner with the final action of the game, but North West held on for a 4–3 victory.

Elsewhere, defending premiers University extended their lead at the top of the table with a 4–2 win over DiamondBacks. University took an early lead through Keenan Johnson before Rubey Hoey doubled the advantage shortly after. Tyler McDonald responded with another trademark drag flick, but Luis Cordero Monks restored the two-goal buffer. Patrick Donergan cut the margin again with a third-quarter strike, though the Students had the answers, with Oscar Sproule icing the match late.

Derwent also continued their strong run of form, moving into third place with a 2–1 victory over OHA. Lucas Sward opened the scoring for the Ships before Jarrod Cunningham continued his hot streak with a diving equaliser before half-time. Derwent created the better chances throughout the contest, and eventually their pressure told, with Alex Shaw rifling a penalty corner into the bottom corner to secure the win.

In the Women’s competition, the leading sides flexed their muscles with a series of commanding victories.

Ladder leaders North West Graduates recorded a controlled 2–0 win over Canterbury. Defensive discipline and dominance of possession have been trademarks of the Bulldogs’ performances this season, and this match was no exception. Ashleigh Arthur opened the scoring with one of the first genuine chances of the game, which did not arrive until the second quarter. Jemma Kenworthy doubled the lead late in the third term with a penalty corner conversion, and that proved enough in a composed 2–0 win.

OHA bounced back from last week’s defeat in emphatic fashion, defeating Derwent 7–0 thanks to a hat-trick from Sofie McLeod. The hosts scored consistently throughout the match, with Madeline Nogajski adding a brace, while Julia Gunn and Taylor Brooks also found the scoresheet.

DiamondBacks were also big winners, recording a 5–0 victory over University in their first outing under new coach Nicole Geeves. Rebecca Payne opened the scoring with a well-timed run, expertly picked out by Emily Donovan, before adding her second just two minutes later. The Snakes looked back to their dangerous best throughout the contest, controlling the tempo and extending the lead through two goals from Olivia Farrell and another from Belinda Page to complete a dominant 5–0 triumph.
