Round 6 of the Premier League season will see the first repeat fixtures of the year, with every side now having faced each opponent once. The competition returns to the same set of matchups that opened the season back in March.
In the Women’s competition, Round 6 begins with Canterbury taking on OHA. Their previous meeting saw OHA make an early statement with a commanding 6–2 victory. The Lions have failed to score in their past three outings and will be desperate to rediscover some attacking form. However, their biggest challenge may come defensively against a Ships side that has already netted a league-best 18 goals this season. Sofie McLeod enters the match fresh off her second hat-trick of the year, with the first also coming against Canterbury back in Round 1.
Next, the DiamondBacks will aim to maintain their momentum when they face Derwent. Opening day produced a dominant 8–0 win for the Snakes, and the Strikers will be eager to show improvement this time around. While results against the competition’s top sides are not necessarily the benchmark for success this season, improved performances and learning from earlier encounters will offer a measure of their progress.
The final women’s fixture sees NWG take on University, after the pair produced one of the tighter contests of Round 1. NWG edged out a 3–2 victory in a match that remained in the balance until late. The ladder leaders have not slowed down since, winning all five matches so far this season. University, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back after a 5–0 defeat to the DiamondBacks last week. Aside from that result, they have been competitive throughout the season, recording two wins and pushing both OHA and NWG in narrow losses, and they will be hoping last week proves to be an outlier.
The Men’s Premier League action opens with DiamondBacks against Derwent. Their Round 1 clash saw the DiamondBacks in scintillating form as they claimed a 4–1 win in one of the standout performances of the opening weekend. Since then, however, they have cooled slightly, winning just one of their past four matches. Derwent, on the other hand, remain unbeaten since Round 1, recording two wins and two draws across their past four games. Despite sitting fifth on the ladder entering the round, the DiamondBacks are only two points outside second place, and a victory here could see them rise as high as second by the end of the weekend.
Next comes a Grand Final rematch between University and NWG. Both sides enjoyed victories last weekend, with returning State Under 21 players playing major roles as the Stueys defeated DiamondBacks 4–2 and the Bulldogs edged Canterbury 4–3. Their earlier meeting this season went the way of the University, who opened their campaign with a 5–2 win. The defending premiers remain the only unbeaten side in the competition, although consecutive draws in recent weeks will give the Bulldogs reason to believe they can challenge the ladder leaders, though they will be without star Angus McMullen who is on national Under 18 duties in India.
The final match of the day sees OHA take on Canterbury. Both sides enter the contest following narrow one-goal defeats in Round 5, against Derwent and NWG, respectively. Their Round 1 meeting saw the Lions sneak away with a 1–0 victory thanks to a goal from Benjamin East. OHA have shown improvement over the past fortnight following a pair of heavy defeats and will be eager to build on their solitary point from the opening five rounds as the competition begins its second cycle of fixtures. Canterbury, meanwhile, remains firmly entrenched in the congested middle of the ladder and has the opportunity to climb higher with a positive result.
