Premier League Round 6 Review

In the Men's Premier League, defending Premiers University made a major statement and put the competition on notice as they demolished North West Graduates 14-3. In a game that pitted last years Grand Finalists against each other and was expected to be a close battle, the Students produced a scintillating display with Oscar Sproule scoring four times, whilst Rubey Hoey and Tyson Johnson also scored hat-tricks. They led 10-0 just a minute into the second half against the hapless Bulldogs, before a Cruze Gray hat-trick in the second half help stem the onslaught somewhat.

In other action, DiamondBacks scored a 3-1 win over Derwent, taking the lead via Luke Palmer after 10 minutes, before Oscar Pritchard doubled it early in the third term. Alex Shaw pulled one back for Derwent with his penalty corner conversion, and his side pushed hard for the equaliser, pulling the goalie in the final moments, and coming within a whisker with a shot just sneaking by the post with 90 seconds remaining, before Oliver Pritchard got on the end of a long ball and put the ball into the empty net to seal the 3-1 win.

Whilst Canterbury moved back into second place on the ladder, as they downed OHA 3-0, as Vincent Harman scored the game’s first goal in the final minute of the third quarter to break the stalemate. Alex Hogan-Jones and Matthew Davis would then extend the lead in the final term.

In the Women’s competition, North West Graduates continue to pace the field and they made it six straight wins to start the season, as they defeated University 4-0. Beth Dobbie scored twice in the win in a match they always looked in control of, with  Wavey Van Dorsselaer and Jemma Kenworthy also getting on the scoresheet.

Premiership rivals DiamondBacks continued their strong uptick in form, as they thumped Derwent 9-0 thanks to braces from Belinda Page, Phillida Bridley and Sophie West. Emily Donovan, Rebecca Payne and Sophie Kruiminch also found the goals as the defending premiers continued to build into the season. 

OHA just got past Canterbury, 1-0 in a clash dominated by both defences, with Julia Gunn’s goal midway through the third quarter the lone goal of the contest, as she prodded home from close range after her initial shot had been well saved. The victory sees the top 3 sides in the competition continuing to separate themselves on the ladder.
