Premier League Round 9 Preview
Published Mon 01 Jun 2026
It's a quick turnaround to Round 9 of the Premier League season, with a midweek set of fixtures taking place from Tuesday to Thursday, featuring a trio of double-headers.
Tuesday night sees DiamondBacks take on Canterbury. The Women's match will kick things off at 6:30pm, with the defending premiers hitting their stride in 2026 after victories over North West Grads and OHA in their past two outings. Canterbury, meanwhile, have struggled to get their season going and face another stern test against one of the competition's form sides.
The Men's clash pits second against third, with the Snakes leapfrogging the Lions over the weekend thanks to their 4-0 win over OHA, while Canterbury suffered a 7-0 defeat at the hands of the rampaging University side. Their previous meeting in Round 4 saw Canterbury claim a narrow 3-2 victory.
Wednesday night will see North West Grads take on OHA. The Men's match is first up, with OHA still searching for a breakthrough victory against a Bulldogs outfit that snapped its losing skid with a dramatic 4-3 win over Derwent on the weekend. OHA's lone point of the season came in the previous meeting between the two sides, a 3-3 draw back in Round 4.
The Women's match sees the Bulldogs enter as ladder leaders after an 11-0 win over Derwent on the weekend. However, they face a tougher assignment against an OHA side that went down 2-0 to DiamondBacks despite creating enough chances to take something from the contest. Every meeting between top-three sides this season has been closely fought, and the Round 4 clash between these teams was no exception, with North West Grads claiming a 2-1 victory.
Finally, Thursday night sees University and Derwent face off. The Women are first up at 6:30pm, with Derwent looking to replicate the effort they produced the last time the teams met. The 1-0 scoreline remains the closest they have come to earning a point this season. University will be full of confidence after a 2-0 win over Canterbury and could open up a six-point buffer over the Lions in the race for the fourth and final finals position.
The Men's side of the double-header will see Derwent attempt to put Saturday's heartbreak against North West Grads behind them, but slowing down this free-scoring University outfit looks a difficult proposition. The defending champions have been firing on all cylinders over the past month, winning their last four games and scoring 31 goals in the process. The last side to deny them maximum points was this Derwent team, which held University to a 3-3 draw back in Round 4.
Note: The bar, kiosk and kitchen will be open each night, so come along, have a bite to eat, a drink and catch some top class Premier League action under the lights of the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre.
