Queechy Penguins Claim GNL Double

The Queechy Penguins completed a Greater Northern League premiership double in 2026, taking out both the Men’s and Women’s titles in Saturday’s Grand Final action.

The day began with the Penguins women chasing a third consecutive premiership against a South Burnie side they had defeated 5–4 in a thrilling Semi-Final a fortnight earlier.

Queechy made the perfect start, with Alice McLauchlan converting a penalty stroke to give her side an early lead.

Naomie Harris then found the bottom corner just minutes later, handing the Penguins a 2–0 advantage inside the opening quarter.

South Burnie’s defence tightened from there, and the score remained unchanged until late in the contest, when Meah Poke hammered home a penalty corner to reduce the margin to 2–1 and set up a tense finish.

The Penguins held firm, however, securing a 2–1 victory and completing a historic women’s premiership three-peat.

The Men’s Greater Northern League Grand Final then produced a major upset, as Queechy stunned the previously unbeaten Burnie Baptist.

The defending premiers entered the decider looking to complete a perfect season, having won all 17 of their matches in 2026. However, after being pushed all the way by Queechy in a narrow 3–2 Semi-Final victory, Baptist knew the Grand Final would be no easy assignment.

A tense and closely fought contest followed, with neither side able to find the back of the net during regulation time. With the scores locked at 0–0, a shootout was required to decide the premiership.

Queechy goalkeeper Nick Green emerged as the hero, denying all four of Burnie Baptist’s shootout attempts. His final save, on Baptist’s opening attempt of the fourth round, sealed a 2–0 shootout victory and a remarkable premiership triumph for the Penguins.
