Rogers and McCausland Debut In Thrilling Kookaburras Victory

Tasmanian locals Lachie Rogers and Magnus McCausland made successful international debuts last night in front of a strong home crowd at the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre.

Alongside fellow Tasmanian Jack Welch, the trio featured in the Kookaburras line-up as Australia claimed a thrilling 3–2 victory over Pakistan in the FIH Pro League. Welch played a pivotal role in the win, earning the penalty stroke that ultimately decided the contest.

The Kookaburras struck early through Tim Brand, who capitalised on Australia’s attacking pressure to open the scoring in the first quarter. Brand then doubled Australia’s advantage midway through the second quarter, finishing clinically to give the home side a 2–0 buffer.

Pakistan responded in the 49th minute when Ahmad Nadeem found the back of the net. Just four minutes later, Sufyan Khan levelled the scores with a well-taken goal, setting up a tense finish.

With the match hanging in the balance and both teams pushing for a winner, Welch earned Australia a penalty stroke. Jeremy Govers stepped up and calmly converted to seal the victory, delighting the raucous Hobart crowd.

The result marks a strong start to the Kookaburras’ FIH Pro League campaign and the first of eight fixtures they will play in Hobart over the next fortnight. They next face Germany on Thursday evening.

International action continues tonight at the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre, with the Hockeyroos taking on Argentina from 7:30pm.
