Published Tue 23 Jun 2026

Hockey Tasmania is delighted to announce that Hobart has been selected to host the 2027 Hockey Australia Under 21 National Championships, with the tournament set to take place at the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre from 23–30 April 2027.

Delivered in partnership with Hockey Australia and supported by Events Tasmania, the Under 21 National Championships will bring together the nation's best emerging men's and women's players as they compete for national honours and future representative opportunities.

The Championships are one of the most significant events on the Australian hockey calendar and play a critical role within Australia's high-performance pathway, with national selectors attending throughout the tournament to identify talent for future Australian squads, including the Burras and Jillaroos programs.

Hosting the event is expected to attract up to 1,000 interstate visitors to Hobart, including athletes, coaches, officials, umpires, technical officials, families and supporters, providing a significant boost to Tasmania's visitor economy and local businesses.

Hockey Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Damian Smith said the organisation was thrilled to be chosen to host the Championshops,

"Securing the 2027 Under 21 National Championships is a fantastic outcome for hockey in Tasmania. We have a strong recent history of hosting national and international events, and we look forward to once again welcoming visitors from across the country to the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre.

"The Championships provide an opportunity for our hockey community to experience one of Australian hockey's premier events while also delivering significant benefits for the wider Tasmanian community."

Hockey Australia Acting CEO David Thompson said the Under 21 National Championships remain one of the most important events in the national pathway.

"The Under 21 National Championships is one of the most important events in our national pathway, bringing together the best emerging athletes from across the country in a high-performance competition environment."

"Hobart has a strong track record of delivering major hockey events, and we are excited to return to the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre in partnership with Hockey Tasmania and with the support of Events Tasmania."

"This event provides athletes with an important opportunity to compete at national level in front of selectors, while also showcasing the strength of hockey across Australia."

Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events Roger Jaensch welcomed the announcement, highlighting the benefits the event will bring to Tasmania.

"Hosting the 2027 Hockey Australia Under 21 National Championships is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Tasmania's world-class sporting facilities and our state's passion for sport."

"We also know events like this help attract hundreds of players, families, volunteers and supporters to Hobart, providing a significant boost to local hotels, restaurants and tourism operators."

"We're delighted to work with Hockey Australia to bring such an important event to Tasmania, and I know our passionate local hockey community will turn out in force to welcome competitors from around the country and create a memorable experience both on and off the field."

Tasmania has a strong recent record at the Championships, with the Men's side achieving a silver medal at the 2026 edition held in Canberra, and seeing six players earn selection into the Australian National Under-21 Men’s Squad off the back of it.
